Considering someone on eBay wants $9k for a GMC 702 V12. I’d rather spend about half and get a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . Amazingly the seller has more than one.

it’s closely related to the Rolls-Royce Merlin, drop it into a hydroplane and go racing.

That’s a mighty big engine putting out not alot of power.

it’s from WWII, what do you want? besides, it’s a modified fighter airplane engine, and airplanes of the era ran their engines at more or less a fixed speed since propellers lose efficiency once the tips of the blades approach the speed of sound. The Merlin, Griffon, and Allison V-1710 were basically designed to run at 2200 rpm all day.

Does it run?

Well, certainly beats a Leyland L60, those accursed things were perpetually breaking down...

I think if I were buying a tank engine I’d probably go with the flat eight from last week.

Which is why it still works despite being 50+ years old. A high strung high output glass jaw is the last thing you want out of an engine in a warzone.

I misread this as being the 702 for sale which is from the 60s and puts out an abysmal amount of power for its size even considering the time period.

I misread the post. I thought the 702 was the deal.

oh ok. yeah, I don’t know why the GMC V12 made such little horsepower.

Or don’t since they’re the reason there are hardly any Merlins left.

I think the war is why there are hardly any Merlins left ;)

AFAIK most of the ones which ran in hydroplanes are still around. Just in museums and in some vintage demo boats.

I picture building something like the Beast of Turin with that. Just belching fire out the sides as you scare the shit out of everyone in a 5 block radius.
